Base yourself in the main village strip, Kampung Cherating Lama, if you want the classic Cherating experience: a walkable stretch of batik workshops, surf schools, and beach cafes. Tanjung Inn is the pick here, a beachfront chalet resort with manicured gardens that's been a village fixture for nearly 20 years.
If you're after the surf-and-backpacker side of things, Payung Guesthouse puts you close to the breaks and cheap eats at village prices. For a self-contained resort stay away from the village, Club Med Cherating Beach's gated enclave toward Balok is the obvious choice, especially if you're already booking its day pass and want to extend the stay overnight.

The Day Pass (RM290 / about $62 adult, RM230 / about $49 teen, RM170 / about $36 child) runs 10am to 6pm and covers both pools, the beach, a buffet lunch, and all-day drinks at three bars. The Evening Pass (RM360 / about $77 adult) runs 6pm to midnight with dinner and nightly entertainment instead of lunch. The Full Day Pass (RM480 / about $103 adult, RM380 / about $81 teen, RM290 / about $62 child) combines both, adding buffet dinner and evening shows on top of the full day of pool and beach access.
